Author Guidelines
These guidelines apply to all manuscripts submitted to Ulakbilge Journal of Social Sciences. Before submitting, please also read the Publication Policy and Research and Publication Ethics pages.
Submission
Manuscripts are submitted only through the journal system (Submit a Manuscript). To submit, you need to register with the journal; accounts from the journal’s previous system were not transferred, so authors who were registered there need to register again. The submitted work must not have been published elsewhere and must not be under review at another journal. The article processing charge is paid at submission (see Fees). The following files are uploaded at submission:
- Main text file: a single Word file containing no information that identifies the authors; no template is needed at first submission (see below)
- Title Page and Author Declaration Form: author details, ethics approval information and the end-of-article statements
- Ethics approval document (for studies that require ethics approval; not sent to reviewers)
- Permissions (if any; not sent to reviewers): permissions for images, texts or scales belonging to others; for translations, the rights holder’s permission
- Supplementary files (if any): additional tables, images, data and materials
In the submission form, enter every author’s given name and surname, affiliation (as Institution, Faculty/Department, City, Country), country and ORCID iD. Enter the title, abstract and keywords in Turkish and in English in their own fields in the system; keywords are not typed into the abstract.
First submission and the Article Template
No template is needed at first submission, so that authors do not spend time on formatting if the manuscript is rejected. It is enough for the main text file to contain the following in a readable layout: the title, abstract and keywords in Turkish and in English (and in Russian for Russian-language articles); the body of the article; tables and figures; and a complete and consistent reference list (APA 7).
When revisions are requested after peer review, the revised manuscript, including the Extended Abstract for articles in Turkish or Russian, is transferred to the Article Template and formatted according to the rules below. For manuscripts accepted without revision, the version prepared in the Article Template is requested after acceptance.
Article types
| Type | Length | Evaluation |
|---|
| Research article | 4,000–10,000 words | Double-blind, at least 2 reviewers |
| Review article | Up to 10,000 words | Double-blind, at least 2 reviewers |
| Book review | 1,000–2,500 words; academic books published in the last five years | Editorial review |
| Interview | Up to 6,000 words; by invitation or with the editor’s approval | Editorial review |
| Translation | Up to 10,000 words; with the rights holder’s permission | Editorial review; a subject expert is consulted where needed |
Word limits exclude the abstracts, references, tables, figures, appendices and the Extended Abstract.
Languages
Articles may be written in Turkish, English or Russian. Every article has a title, abstract and keywords in Turkish and in English; Russian-language articles also have a title, abstract and keywords in Russian. For authors who do not write in Turkish, the Turkish title, abstract and keywords may be prepared by the Turkish language editor. Turkish texts follow the spelling guide of the Turkish Language Association (TDK).
Structure of the article
- Title: in Turkish and in English (and in Russian for Russian-language articles); it reflects the subject clearly and does not exceed twelve words. English titles follow APA title case; Turkish titles follow the Turkish Language Association’s rules for titles of works. Titles are not written entirely in capital letters.
- Abstracts: 150–250 words each, stating the purpose, method or approach, main findings and conclusion of the study. Abstracts contain no references, tables or figures. They are followed by 3–10 keywords.
- Body of the article: sections are organised under meaningful headings. Empirical studies have Introduction, Method, Results, and Discussion and Conclusion sections; theoretical, historical and arts studies use headings suited to their content.
- End-of-article statements (see below; added after acceptance)
- References
- Appendices (if any)
- Extended Abstract (for articles in Turkish or Russian; added at the revision stage)
Extended Abstract
For Turkish- and Russian-language articles submitted from October 2026 onwards, an Extended Abstract in English of 750–1,000 words is required. It is not needed at first submission; it is written in the Extended Abstract section of the template and submitted with the revised manuscript. The Extended Abstract presents the purpose, method or approach, main findings or arguments and conclusion of the study so that readers can understand the article’s contribution without reading the full text; empirical studies use the subheadings Introduction, Method, Results and Discussion. Authors are responsible for the language of the Extended Abstract; the English language editor may make any corrections needed.
Format
The following rules apply to the text submitted in the Article Template at the revision stage.
- Word file (.docx); A4, Times New Roman 12 pt, 1.5 line spacing, 2.5 cm margins.
- Headings are formatted in no more than three levels according to the APA 7 heading levels.
- Direct quotations of fewer than 40 words are placed in quotation marks within the text; quotations of 40 words or more are set as a separate block, without quotation marks, indented 1.27 cm from the left margin.
- Tables and figures are numbered separately and placed immediately after the paragraph in which they are first mentioned. The number and title are placed above the table or figure; notes and the source are given below it. Images should have a resolution of at least 300 dpi and should also be uploaded as supplementary files.
- Footnotes are used only for explanatory notes and are kept to a minimum; they are not used for citations.
- In quantitative studies, statistics are reported according to APA 7: the test statistic, degrees of freedom, exact p value and effect size are given.
Ethics approval information
For studies that require ethics approval, the name of the committee and the date and number of the decision are given in the Method section and in the Ethics Approval statement at the end of the article; the name of the institution is masked during blind review. At publication this information is also shown on the first page of the article. Institutional permissions, informed consent and permissions to use works are also stated in the article (see Ethics Approval and Informed Consent).
End-of-article statements
During review, the following statements are given on the Title Page and Author Declaration Form; after acceptance they are added to the article, under the same headings, before the reference list:
- Ethics Approval: the name of the committee and the date and number of the decision, or the reason why approval was not required
- Author Contributions: each author’s contribution using CRediT roles (see Authorship and Contributorship)
- Funding and Acknowledgements: sources of funding (with project titles and numbers) and acknowledgements
- Conflict of Interest: whether any conflict of interest exists; board membership (see Conflicts of Interest and Funding)
- Data Availability Statement (see Data Sharing and Open Science)
- Use of Artificial Intelligence (see Artificial Intelligence Policy)
- Thesis or Conference Paper (if any): details of the thesis or conference paper from which the article is derived
