Abstract

Among the most valuable heritages that a society can pass on from generation to generation are culture and art. Emerging from the steppe culture and spreading across the world, one of the oldest and most deep-rooted art forms—Turkish-Islamic art—took root in Anatolia. Following the Battle of Manzikert in 1071, the Seljuk Turks gave life to increasingly diverse examples of their rich motifs, which are visible in every architectural work. The architectural monuments built by the Anatolian Seljuks stand as the finest evidence of this. Various written and visual sources exist regarding the Çifte Minareli Medrese, which constitutes the subject of this study. In contrast, there are no written sources regarding the ornamental decoration and geometric design elements of the eastern and western iwans of the madrasah. Based on the findings obtained, the Çifte Minareli Madrasah, which dates to the late 13th century and has become synonymous with the name of Erzurum, was built by the Anatolian Seljuks. It holds the distinction of being the largest madrasah in Anatolia, as well as featuring the largest tomb chamber (kümbet) adjoining the southern iwan. The madrasa was constructed as a two-story structure with four iwans. The ground floor contains 19 student cells, while the upper floor has 18. In this study, the ornamental and geometric motifs located in the eastern and western iwans of the Çifte Minareli Madrasa in Erzurum, dating to the late 13th century and belonging to the Anatolian Seljuks, were examined to identify their differences and similarities. The existing ornamental and geometric decoration elements were analyzed as a whole. In addition, the similarities between the ornamentations of the Çifte Minareli Madrasah and those of Central Asian Seljuk decorations have been identified and compared. Based on on-site observations and qualitative research methods, the existing decorations were analyzed, the missing parts were reconstructed using computer-aided programs, and a total of six motif drawings were produced. This study aims to contribute to future academic research on the art of the Seljuk period.
