Abstract
Endowed with a deep-rooted background, ceramic discipline in itself integrates various and distinctive practices. While pushing the limits of craft within the context of traditional ceramic art, Phoebe Cummings manages to form her own language of expression, and via using the key material of ceramic discipline, clay, she can bring course-driven works into surface. Not only within the scope of art /craft but also within the context of the technique she employs, the artist questions the notion that change and transformation connects with its own existence in nature too. In her sculptures / installations it is worth noticing that without burning the key ingredient of ceramic, clay, she leaves it to the course; by letting the material dry, fracture, disjoint and fall, spoil she transforms the material at the end of her exhibition and by transforming after solving in water, the artist reuses the same material in upcoming projects. The artist argues that course is the symbol of change and transiency. As if living in a ritual the artist, by harnessing free-hand shaping technique manifests fragile and very tender sculptures / installations and wonders about "what" we can all carry to the future. This paper thus aims to analyze art / craft journey of Phoebe Cummings, to offer samples of art works and to demonstrate different areas of the use of clay, which is the key ingredient of ceramic works.
