Nurullah Berk’in eserlerinde görülen motifler, sanatçının Türk resmine özgün modern anlatım dili oluşturma arayışının somut birer yansımasıdır.

Abstract

Motif Effects in Nurullah Berk's Works and Their Reflections in Turkish Painting

The motifs seen in Nurullah Berk's works are a concrete reflection of the artist's quest to create a unique, modern narrative language for Turkish painting. Committed to history and Turkish culture, the artist has presented a modern perspective on Turkish art in his works. The purpose of this research is to examine the influence of motifs in the works of Nurullah Berk, one of the pioneers of Turkish painting during the Republican era, and the reflections of these influences on Turkish painting. The research was designed using a survey method. An analysis of the work was also conducted. While Berk adopted the formal innovations of Western painting, he drew inspiration from the motifs and aesthetic values of traditional Turkish-Islamic art, thus creating a unique synthesis between indigenous elements and the universal language of art. The superficial order, geometric form structure, and color perception seen in the artist's works are directly related to the formal principles of traditional arts such as miniature, calligraphy, and illumination. The figurative and formal approach in Berk's works blends the plastic values of modern art with depictions of nature, including Anatolian daily life and handicrafts, creating a uniquely modern language of expression. While the work ‘Woman Working the Embroidery’ symbolises traditional female labour, productivity and cultural continuity, the ‘Man Smoking the Hookah’ symbolically reveals a section of social life and the culture of male socialisation. "Camel Thorns" represents the resilience and simple beauty of Anatolia through natural motifs. In all these works, Berk synthesizes the formal language of Western modernism with local themes, creating a unique narrative form of Turkish modernism. The motifs included in the artist's works, which blend Anatolian motifs with cubic influences in his figurative works about daily life, have become cultural symbols representing both social memory and aesthetic innovation.
