Abstract

Stanley William Hayter and Workshop 17 in 20th Century Print Making

One of the most important engravers of the 20th century, S.W. Hayter, during his time, developed many techniques in the art of engraving. With the engraving Atelier 17 he established in Paris in 1927, he enabled the artists of the time to discover the possibilities of print making and to research and experiment with innovative techniques. He tried to place the consciousness that engraving is not only a method of reproduction of the work, but a form of creation on its own. In this study, the importance of William Hayter and Workshop 17 in 20th century print making art, the techniques they developed, the workshop environments, the surrealist, cubist and abstract expressionist artists who continued to Atelier 17 and Turkish artists will be explained with visuals and engravings. As a result, S.W. Hayter opened a print making studio in Paris and later in New York, developed techniques and methods of print making, and opened the studio to surrealist, cubist, abstract expressionist artists of the time. S.W.Hayter and Atelier 17 have an important place in the history of print making. In the 1940s, he moved his studio to New York and introduced and demonstrated the methods and expressions of print making, which are not known to many artists in America, through conferences, biennials and exhibitions.S.W.Hayter showed that printmaking is a form of artistic expression in itself and that artists can develop individual techniques in this field. The methods and techniques developed by Hayter at that time continue to be used by many artists today.
