Abstract

Interaction of Photography and Art

Photography arose from adding light-sensitive plates to the camera obscura, which has been used to serve for painting since Renaissance, and reflecting and fixing the image displayed from the hole onto paper. The first photograph was taken in 1827 in France by Joseph Nicephore Niepce. L. Daguerre developed the Daguerreotype which bore his name in 1838, and the invention of print on paper in the 1840s and gelatinous emulsion in 1871 were factors establishing the technical basis of photography. The history of photography can be traced from technical, social, and artistic perspectives. However, this study does not aim to investigate this history. It aims to present a top-down view on how photography impacted art and vice versa. Examples from the history of photography and art will be provided and the common fields where they coincide, that is, their interaction will be examined.
