Abstract
A Translation Into Turkish in the Period of Soviet Georgian Literature: Mikheil Cavahişvili’s Work Titled “Şeytanın Taşı”
In the early years of the Soviet era, Georgian literature had to struggle with contradictions and overcome foreign literary influences and understandings. The new generation of writers, who were provided with all facilities for creative work, started to be in pursuit of literary novelties. Georgian Soviet literature created an important force for new Soviet people to improve their spiritual and moral qualities. The story written by Mikheil Cavaxishvili, a Georgian writer and social and political intellectual of the 20th century and the leader of the national struggle movement in the period of 1921-1924, was translated by Ibrahim Yavuz Goradze with the name of “Şeytanın Taşı” in 1980. In the present study, different translation equivalents and strategies were used in the examples extracted from both texts in the story translation from Georgian to Turkish. A number of problems in terms of linguistics in the target language were discussed by using Miheil Cavahişvili’s story titled “Şeytanın Taşı”. One of the most striking points in the translation is that Russian expressions in the work have caused a set of problems while being translated into Turkish. The way of translating expressions in the original text into the target language, semantic shifts in the translation, honorific wording, reflections of grammar differences in the two languages on the translation, and translation analyses were also examined through this analytical and comparative study
