1629101492 PERFECTION VERSUS CREATIVITY CONSTRUCTED IN MOVIE SOUNDTRACKS OF “TAARE ZAMEEN PAR” (2007)

Taare Zameen Par (2007) with 23 awards and 13 award nominations, directed by Aamir Khan, Amole Gupte and Ram Madhvani is about the life of a third grade student with special needs. Having trouble perceiving letters and numbers, Ishaan (Darsheel Safary) is treated destructively in the family and around the school. While his older brother has excellent achievements in school and sports; Ishaan is messy, interested in daydreaming, and games; not schoolworks. However, his misfortune will be turned upside down with his art teacher named Ram Shankar Nikumbh, whom he meets at his new school. All the contrasts between perfection and creativity are handled through (a) sibling/brother, (b) traditional/non-traditional teacher models and (c) the desires of the minority/majority. How this intensity is reinforced has been explained by basing on theory of associationism. The narration of the video clips as "the existing order", "defects in the order" and "new order" creates a flow from perfection to creativity and eventually creativity wins. In the same order, considering the functions of the video clips in the story, they were analyzed under three sub-categories: (a) lyrics, (b) video and (c) melody. With this analysis, three opposing sub-themes emerged: difference/repetition, understanding/explanation, freedom/devotion. It has been observed that while perfection establishing the relations with the concepts of repetition, explanation and devotion; it establishes a relationship with the concepts of creativity, difference, understanding and freedom.
